FAQ about private music lessons:
Q: What is the best age for a child to start music lessons?
A: 4-5 years old is considered old enough for a young child to be engaged in a 30-minute music lesson that consists of games, fun activities and beginning playing/singing techniques. Don’t be afraid to enroll your child when they are very young. If they aren’t ready, the instructor will be able to tell you and will give the best recommendation of when to try again.
Q: How long should the lessons be?
A: The length of a lesson depends on each student, their age, concentration ability, interest, school and other activities schedule, personal music goals. We recommend to start the youngest children (4-6 y.o) at 30-minute lessons, 7-10 y.o would benefit from 45-minute lessons and for older kids/teenagers and adults we recommend a 60-minute lesson, or a package of 2 lessons per week (you will get a discount for those!) We always discuss the lesson length with the parents and the kids, to make sure everyone is on the same page with the time investment. There’s an option available of trying out longer lessons on a month-to-month basis to see if works and re-evaluating every month.
Q: How talented/gifted do I or my child have to be to take music lessons?
A: This is a common question that almost all prospective students ask. We all begin our music journey at different starting points. In our opinion, there is no such thing as “not talented enough”. We believe in hard work and love for music and practicing your skill. Practice makes progress - it’s as simple as that. In fact, consistent work is proven to get more results than “the talent someone was born with”. Playing and singing music is a skill, just like any other skill. Of course, it requires a certain level of musicality, sense of rhythm, pitch, etc. But it CAN be developed and improved with time. We have hundreds of former and current students that showcase that every time they play music.
Q: Are music lessons good investment?
A: Absolutely, yes they are. There are countless benefits that come from taking music lessons at any age, other than it being a pure enjoyment and a good time!
Some of those are: enhancement of the brains’ functionality: creating new neural connections, problem solving, pattern recognition, forming mental pictures of objects, improved memory and attention, significant improvement of motor skills; discipline skills - setting goals and achieving them helps to build a healthy self-esteem; social skills and empathy -researchers found that playing/singing music with other people helps us to be more in tune with other humans. Lastly, self-expression is one of the main skills, in our opinion, that shouldn’t be overlooked. Music can be a healthy outlet for a child’s’ or teenager’s unsettled emotions. Expressing themselves through music can help kids (and adults) with their mental health, which is very important for our overall well-being.
Q: Can I be too old to take music lessons?
A: Not in our school, you can’t! Our oldest students were 71 and 73 years old and they absolutely enjoyed their experience and learning their passion. In fact, it’s a common hobby among seniors or newly retired folks to take music lessons and they get a lot of benefits from that, too! Learning music later in life helps to keep your brain stimulated, creating new neural connections, your memory improves and there are decreased instances of hearing loss. More than that, you can learn that cool song from your younger days and play it for your loved one at a special occasion or just re-live your favorite moments through making music!
